THE TRUE ESSENCE OF LOVE

"Love must be free of hypocrisy..." - Romans 12:9 (NASB)

The word “love” in Greek refers to that special kind of God’s self-giving love, known as “agape”. This kind of love is meant to be sincere and “free of hypocrisy”. The concept of “hypocrisy” has roots in the theaters of ancient Greece. If you’ve ever seen a Greek play, you might recall the use of two masks – one with a frown and the other with a smile – which the actor would hold in front of their face while speaking from behind. The word “hypocrisy” stems from this theatrical setting, where individuals would essentially play a game, speaking from behind a mask that did not reflect who they truly were. Their actions and words didn’t align with their authentic selves.

Authentic love is genuine and sincere, and insincerity is quickly exposed to the world. It’s a common tendency for people to live behind a facade, always striving to impress others with their spiritual maturity while hiding their true struggles. We all wrestle with sin, yet many are afraid to admit it because of the fear of being judged as immature. The desire to fit in and belong often leads to the adoption of different personas in different social groups, rather than embracing genuineness.

Hypocrisy is something God truly despises. Jesus strongly opposed it and didn’t hesitate to condemn it, especially when he saw it in the Pharisees. The apostle Paul stresses how important it is to be sincere and genuine in our interactions with others, and with God, most importantly; because it affects the efficacy of our prayers (cf. Ps 66:18) . Sadly, Christians are often seen as hypocritical because of the gap between what they say and how they act. Even though the church isn’t perfect, there is a constant call to reflect the character of Christ in our everyday lives. It’s crucial to strive for authenticity and sincerity in love, because it’s through genuine love (agape) that the world can truly see the life-changing power of the Gospel.
