"I am amazed that you are so quickly deserting Him who called you by the grace of Christ, for a different gospel;" - Galatians 1:6 (NASB)
After saying hello, Paul quickly gets to the point in his letter to the Galatians. He’s upset that these believers have been misled about the true message of the Gospel. Instead of starting with a positive note, he’s straightforward and tells them how shocked he is at their foolishness. He can’t believe what they’re doing, especially because not long ago they accepted the Gospel he preached to them. Now they are turning away from it because of some people called Judaizers who have stirred things up.
Paul uses the word “deserting” to show that they are in the process of turning away from the Gospel, not that they have completely done it yet. This word is like a military term for rebellion. Paul is surprised that they are turning away and choosing to follow the teachings of the Judaizers, who want them to follow the rules of Judaism instead of the grace-based Gospel taught by Paul.
He emphasizes that it is God who calls people to Him. Even though they have been chosen by God, they are still choosing to turn away, showing that both God’s choice and their free will are at work. This highlights the truth in the Bible that God takes the first step in matters of faith. It’s not us deciding to follow God, but rather God leading us and us responding to His call.
The key point is that there is only one true Gospel, the one that comes through Christ alone by faith and repentance. These false teachers were adding rules and human efforts to the simple message of salvation by grace. Paul is adamant that salvation is only through Christ, and he warns against following any other message.
