New Testament pharisaism, which can be understood as an ideology seeking to return to an acceptance based on human performance rather than on what Christ has accomplished, can lead individuals down a path of striving to impress God through a “resume” of what they have either refrained from doing or achieved. Yet, this approach fails to recognize that God is not impressed by our self-centered performances, but rather by the perfection of His Son. God accepts broken, wounded, and sinful individuals in and through the redemptive work of Jesus Christ.
Embracing the fullness of the Gospel brings forth a profound freedom. This Christian freedom is not a license to indulge in selfish desires, but rather a liberation from the bondage of self-centeredness and an “all about me” mindset. It is a freedom that is found in a deep relationship with Jesus Christ. On the contrary, Christian legalism, which seeks to impose strict adherence to religious rules and regulations, does not offer true freedom but rather places believers in a state of bondage.
Throughout history, there has always been a danger of being ensnared by the enticements of legalistic practices presented by sincere religious zealots. Therefore, it is essential to continually seek God’s guidance and tune our hearts and minds to the teachings and example of Jesus of Nazareth. By doing so, we can experience the genuine liberty that comes from embracing the grace, love, and acceptance found in the Gospel. May God grant us the wisdom and strength to walk in this freedom and resist the allure of legalistic tendencies.
Remember, true freedom is not found in trying to impress God through our own efforts or in rigidly adhering to man-made regulations. Rather, it is discovered in humbly surrendering to Jesus, acknowledging our brokenness, and putting our trust in Him. God accepts us as we are, and it is through His Son that we find the true freedom that our souls long for.
