The words “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:32) are familiar to many, often displayed in schools and universities as a celebration of education and knowledge. But was Jesus speaking merely about intellectual enlightenment?
In John 8:31–36, Jesus addresses a deeper form of captivity: humanity’s bondage to sin. The freedom He promises is not simply the accumulation of information but liberation through the Son, who calls us to abide in His word and follow His way.
This does not diminish education, reason, or critical inquiry. Rather, it reminds us that truth is more than something we possess intellectually. In Jesus Christ, truth becomes the means by which God renews our minds, transforms our lives, and calls us into the freedom of His new creation.
Education can sharpen the mind. Only the Son can set us free indeed.
Listen to this episode of Scripture, Theology, and Life as we explore the truth that truly makes us free.
